On January 8, 1970, the Auditorium, built in 1904, burned down on one of the coldest nights of the year. A frozen fire hydrant delayed the fire department in playing water on the blaze. It was about 20 to 25 minutes before firemen were able to get the water flowing and in that time the building was consumed.
